A US agency has heard that all 'new' abandonment cases from here on out will be sent to one orphanage, and it is unknown if they will be available for adoption. If they aren't available for adoption, this could potentially be bad news for those who received referrals during the ban.

(If you have any more information about this, please contact me!)

  1. Where do these rumours come from? I can't believe that they will take babies out of the transition homes, if they have already been referred. Our children have been in the transition home for several months.
Unless the rumour comes from an agency, I do not think it should be posted on the blog, because anyone can say such a horrible thing!!?!

  2. Sorry! I will clarify:
This information does come from an agency; it comes from one of the agencies who had a successful court date Wednesday and has more court dates scheduled this week for their clients. As I understand it, the statement that all new abandoned children would be housed in one orphanage was given as fact, and they were unsure whether they would be available for international adoption. Due to the nature of one of the cases that has already passed court, I don't believe people with already referred children need to worry (but that is ONLY my opinion...)

  3. I meant all new children found abandoned from here on out will be taken to a single orphanage. I hope I'm making sense. It's late here :)

(I edited my post to indicate that it does indeed come from an agency)

  4. Ok thank you Etiopap, I knew it would not be your style to post a rumour that did not come from an agency ;)
But it is hard to believe, even the thought of finding an orphanage big enough for all these children. And what about abandoned children found in other cities, they have never been affected by the ban....
I will continue to stay calm untill anything is confirmed bye my agency, I think (I will try), but I think it sounds unlikely to be true. If it applies to abandoned children that have not already been referred, maybe the agency is only saying these children will maybe not be adopted through this particular agency in the future? Could that be it?

  5. Perhaps! And if it makes you feel better, the source found the information confusing as well. I think they were hoping someone else had heard this and could either confirm or rebutte it.

  6. Well it could be new procedure that all children will be sent to one (very big) orphanage, but I should think that they will still be adopted. And I can't imagine that it applies to children who have already been referred. There has been some talk about cases that have already had a court date could go through "automatically" in some way, and it does not make sense that your luck depends on whether you had a court date already or not. For instance we had our referral before the ban but never had a court date.
Have a good nights sleep Ethiopap, you're doing an amazing job. I'm sure we will soon have the answer to what was meant here :)

  11. Didnt some agencies give out referrals of abandoned children DURING the ban? What do these guys know. This is all very awful.

  12. I think different agencies have different policies and some of them pass along the any bit of info they get because their clients just want to be up to date on everything and just hear something. They will tell their clients that it is still rumor, and it is also important to remember that this is the Ethiopian government that we are dealing with...what is fact at 10:00am is old news and irrelevant by 5:00pm. So it is hard to know what the truth is until it happens. I feel that all agencies have the best intentions when giving out this info...its up to us to manage how we digest it. And at least some agencies give out the info...my agency does not tell you anything until it does, in fact happen. We did not even know that we had a court date that did not happen because of the ban until after the State Department posted the ban...you can imagine our frustration. I am on the warpath with my agency today after getting all of this info from this blog. Sadly, I told them about MOWA closing....hello!!!! Its called being proactive and they are not!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Anon 6:10 am: My agency did not give out referrals during the ban for affected children. However, referrals of abandoned children during the ban will not be able to pass court as long as the MOWA is closed as they need the recommendation letter.

How do you know this? Have you heard anything about the children being sent to a government place? How do you know they will be adoptable?

  15. we received a referral during the ban. it was in the middle of may, so not much after the ban was implemented, but still during. we've not actually had the opportunity to accept her 'officially' in court yet. now, maybe never.
we haven't looked at the pictures we received of her since we got them because we aren't sure anything will come of it; we don't want to get attached to a baby girl only to find out she's not available. that feeling is even more so now that she 'might' not be adoptable.

never has anything so difficult and emotional and convoluted been worse than anticipated than this morass.

best wishes to all of you who are awaiting your children.
i just hope we are allowed to adopt ours. eventually. one day....

  16. Anon 7:25: I know nothing. I got you wrong in your first post, sorry. My agency stopped with giving referrals of abandoned children found in Addis as they did not know, of course, what the authorities will decide. Other agencies, e. g. Anons 8:33 agency, still referred affected children. I don't know whether these kids are adoptable or not. I just said that you need the documents issued by MOWA and if these are missing you cannot pass court.

I hope it's more clear now and I apologise for any confusion or misunderstandings.
