(This post was amended at the request of the source):

From a non US-agency it is reported that court dates are now given for abandoned children found in Addis Abeba from the orphanages Kids Care, Almaz Ashene and Sele Enat, and they expect more court dates.

The agency believes that five orphanages seem to be in focus: Enat Alem, Betezata, Edget, Betesaida and Godanaw, and that families with children here have to wait for the investigation to finish before getting court dates.

Unfortunately they have no news as to the status of the police investigation.

(12/6/2011 update: The organization Edget Baandnet Children's Center, located in Awassa, would like it to be known that they are not the Edget mentioned in this post, and that they were not involved in an abandoned children investigation in 2009.)

  2. Edget is located in the southern part of Addis Ababa, in the Nefas Silk-Lafto sub-city.

  3. So, are only these orphanages mentioned getting court dates or should all agencies EXCEPT those in working with the five orphanages in question be getting dates?

  4. Anon, so far we only have confirmation that the 3 orphanages mentioned have gotten court dates for new abandonment cases. Kids Care in particular has at least 2 non-US agencies with new court dates. Apparently people with children from these 3 orphanages who had court dates during the hold (and were not heard because of it) have not been assigned new dates yet, and we can't figure out why.

If anyone has an abandoned-in-Addis case and has recently received a court date, please contact me. I know IAN uses Sele Enat and AWAA uses Kids Care, so hopefully we will start to see court dates being given (for new abandonment cases) for these agencies soon. Again, neither non-US agency being given court dates has received any new ones for people whose original court dates were during the hold. Hope that all made sense!

  5. That does makes sense what you wrote but that makes NO sense why they would do it that way!!! why would they give dates to NEW cases before hearing cases from those of us that were supposed to be heard already? That is going to be a hard pill to swallow to see that happening. I thought they would get those of us that were skipped due to the ban through first???

  6. Where are the five suspect orphanages located? Specifically Betesaida. Thank you. To the previous poster, maybe they are not scheduling ne court dates for those caught up in the hold until every one of those cases is investigated for fraud. Just a thought.

  7. This would be "perfect". They are giving new court dates and we (especially our kids) have to wait until the cows come home.

  8. Does anyone know if Betezata is the same as Bethzatha Children's Home Association? I know spellings are often varied. Our son's paperwork was processed through Bethzatha, though he never lived there.

  9. To the person who wanted to know where Betesaida is (my agency spells is Bethsaida and I've seen it Bete Saida too) it's on the east side in Yeka or Bole. I think Yeka.

  10. The orphanage where our daughter is is called Bethazatha Children's Home Association.
Handwritten on the address line of the signature it looks like it reads Nifs Silk Lafta. Does anyone know if this might be the "Betezata" mentioned as one of the orphanages in focus?
    thanks,
    maggie

  11. I don't know this for sure, but I'm guessing Bethzatha/Bethazatha Children's Home Association and Betezata are probably the same.

Interesting that 2 of the 5 are in Nefs Silk-Lafto. Does anyone know where Enat and Godanaw are located?

  12. To Anon asking for Enat: Maybe I am completely wrong but as far as I remember Enat Alem is located in Kirkos.
