There has been some contradiction regarding the orphanage Betesaida and whether it’s one of the 5 orphanages that is/was under investigation. A couple non-US agencies have said they believe it to be one of the 5, while a US agency that works with Bete Saida says it is not. It is also possible that Betesaida and Bete Saida are two different institutions, though highly unlikely.

ETA: further information regarding Bete Saida versus Betesaida
(an email I received):

Bete Saida Hitsanat Merja Mahiber is not an orphange under investigation. I know someone that has seen the list and I can assure you they are not under investigation.

  1. Is there any confirmation that Bethzatha is the same?

  2. Is there any possibility that we know which agencies are involved in the investigation and why?

  3. Agencies are not involved, its the orphanges, is what I am told from our agency.

Nothing has been really released on which ones.

  4. Anon 1, I've been trying to find out if Betezata and Bethzatha are the same orphanage and haven't had much success--mostly because no one seems to be using an orphanage spelled "Betezata", just Bethzatha Children's Home Association. Someone who's child was from Bethzatha says that it's pronounced "beta-zata", so my best guess is that the two are likely the same place.

Anon 2, I keep hearing the investigation is/was an orphanage issue and not an agency one, as the previous poster said.

  5. I wanted to add that I DO have confirmation that Bete Saida and Bethsaida are the same orphanage (not sure about Betesaida based on this post).

  6. AM I missing something? Does anyone know about Bethzatha Children's Home assoc?

  7. To anonymous, there were 2 different orphanages on the list of 5 called betesaida and betezata. This post is about beteSAIDA. Did you see the comment about bethzatha children's home abvove? nobody seems to know if it's the same as "betezata". I've asked my agency and they dont know either.

  8. Our agency said their are up to 5 different homes and orphanages with a form of the name Bethsaida..or similiar....and only one of them is involved. Names are so similiar.....

  9. Yep, it's very confusing with all of the similar names! The five suspected orphanages have still not been confirmed officially, so keep that in mind also.

  10. So, what are everyones thoughts. 5 orphanges that were under suspect. I am wondering if since our baby came from one of the possible orphanges, does that mean there is a risk of out child not being adoptable? I hate these unknowns!

  11. Our baby is from one of the 5 too, so I think about that also. But weren't there just 17 cases that were sent to the 5 orphanages. I'm hoping maybe there's only 2 or 3 suspicious ones from our orphanage and praying of course that our baby's not one of them!

  12. From my understanding the 17 cases were what first alerted the judges, those cases had court date but did not pass. I personally believe that the investigation has focused on orphanages and police procedures. Whether they have found anything on any other cases we can't know. But with the high number of abandonment cases you could think that some of these children in fact have parents that can be found but who still want to put the child up for adoption and then maybe some of them will have to change status into relinquishment cases. But that is just my guess, they might as well find nothing at all and just improve police procedures.

  13. From what I take on it, is that there are certain requirements to "relinquish" your child in Ethiopia. I think that because of the certain requirements you have to meet, this is causing more abandonment cases under false circumstances. I think in the end there will be tighter procedures and policies.

I think they just need to lets us go through court. IF there is a change that the bio mom of our baby sold her than she doesnt need to go back in that situation.

  14. I think its the same. Our daugther is also from de Betesaida Children support. Our papers from the adoption agency say's Betesaida but the official papers from the Betesaida Children support say's Betezatha.

  15. Margot, that's interesting. If Betezata and Betesaida are the same, than who is the 5th orphanage under investigation? My baby's at Bete Saida, and I'm starting to think it's a different orphanage altogether and thinking (hoping) now maybe it's not one of the 5.

  16. Our agency seems to think, that Enat Alem is only being investigated because it's a big orphanage and therefore naturally takes in a lot of abandoned children. Maybe that applies to all the orphanages in question, and we should not be all that worried???

  17. The program director from my agency also expressed suspicion of Enat Alem. It seems to be the black sheep of the orphanages. Wasn't it closed down to adoptions for a time last summer?

  18. Irene, I like your thoughts on that! I hope that what it turns out to be!

By the way Irene, I saw you posted on my blog and tried to email you. Did you receive it?

  19. Hi Amanda oh that is you :) No I did not receive it but in fact I was just confused that day...and forgetting that not all children go to the same transition home from Enat Alem (of course silly me, ours belong to our agency)...so I just had hopes for some photos, but afterwards I realized that I was not thinking straight. Thank you anyhow :)

  20. Last summer Enat Alem was being investigated but that was about relinquisments and they were back on track after 6 weeks as far as I know. It is true, that it has been mentioned a lot, but untill we really hear something I will not be that worried. My agency does not seem worried and has even been giving referrals from E.A. during the ban.

  21. PAP, so if you know someone who has seen the list, then could this person PLEASE tell us which orphanages are on it? Are they the same ones mentioned in a prior post?

  22. Does anyone know anything about the orphanage called Finot Lewegen? Do we know when the 17 were "abandoned?"

    ReplyDelete
  23. Irene, Our U.S. agency said the government selected the orphanages to adopt by looking at a one-month period and choosing the orphanages that had a high number of abandonments. They also said that betesaida -- or bete saida, whichever it is -- said that was true for the month in question, but not when you looked at the average for the past year.

  24. Just wanted to say that I am so happy to have found this blog. I was so frustrated with the lack of info. I was asking about Finot Lewegen above. Does anyone know if this orphanage was on the "list"? If I could figure out the date of the 17 children incident, it may help figure out if our referred child was involved. Our agency seems extremely hesitant to make any predictions or offer any info. We are hoping the comments about possible ban lifting and courts staying open are true. Our child is at least 18 months older than our parameters and after TB testing and/or treatment who knows...

  25. Thanks Jill! I haven't heard anything about Finot Lewegen and according to several agencies, it's not on the list of investigated orphanages. I have heard March or April for the 17 cases, but don't have anything concrete on that. More and more agencies are now starting to say the investigation part of the hold is over, so hopefully they will lift the ban soon.
