From a European PAP, concerning the meeting held on the 13th:

"They have decided to take off all the referrals with both birth parents alive. At least my agency had 7 families that have been informed. Now they are asking for death certificate but, at the moment, suppossed to go on with adoptions with at least one birth parent alive..."

This may only affect this particular agency and/or country; please let us know if your agency says their referrals are similarly affected.

  1. What about abandonment cases? If this change is made on a wide scale, curious as to whether those numbers will now increase. . .

  2. Yes my agency is required to supply death certificates for a referred child with one parent living. Our case is now in limbo because of this. We are hopeful that the court will reconsider their decision.

  3. It has been several weeks since our US agency has had any referrals come in and I know of one other agency experiencing the same thing. Any word on if this is a direct effect of this ruling?

  4. It is possible that the Ethiopian social workers are spending more time finding additional documents for cases already in process and less time working on finding documents for new referrals... Has anyone heard of death certificates being issued for for children who have lost biological, particularly who have come from rural areas?

  5. We are currently on hold (can't submit to court) until death certificates are gotten. But, our kids are from very rural areas and they believe it's not possible or very hard to attain these documents. However, our agency is hopeful the court will drop the new requirement. Has anyone else heard this? We are SO hoping it's dropped soon! Please anyone with any info I'd love to hear!

  6. Yes, our agency is obtaining statements from parents and witnesses to obtain a legal death certificate legally.

  7. We were able to get death certificates and move ahead in our process successfully. So, it's possible! We only waited 3 weeks to get them and are now waiting on a court date.
