Requiring parents to appear in court

One US agency is reporting that the Ethiopian government is currently discussing the idea of requiring prospective adoptive parents to be present at their children's court hearings. This would mean either 2 trips for parents or an extended stay until embassy, and possibly the end of the escort and one parent traveling options. If anyone has any additional information to share, please feel free to email me or comment here.

  1. That sounds very interesting. Please tell me more, who knows about it.

  3. Our agency sent out an e-mail today telling parents that this rule HAS been announced today and that it is a 'from this day on' kind of mandate. The agency is attempting to pin down what this means to families with court dates in the very near future, etc. and whether or not other procedures (like the timing of when the MoWA writes approval letters, etc) will adapt to this switch.

I cannot imagine how this is not going to create real chaos.

  4. We also just got an email from our agency. We have a court date scheduled for March 17th and now we are told that it will probably be postponed.

  5. Oh, Anonymous @ 1:55--I'm so sorry. For us, we had five court dates between November and early February and are still waiting on our Embassy date confirmation. To contemplate trying to figure this all out KNOWING that the court dates aren't easily passed the first time just is too much.

I'm so sorry that this could postpone you!

  6. Our agency is being slow to confirm this new rule, also saying that the rumors they heard had two dates, either immediately or April 9. Our current (fourth) court date is set for March 30, so we have fingers crossed for the later date, but that wouldn't be consistent with our luck so far. I wonder if they required both parents to come for the court date, whether or not only one could come to pick the child up...?
