An email I received:

My agency informed us on November 13th that our case, among five others within our agency, is caught up in a delay due to an investigation of the local government (I guess this is called the Kebele) in the district that our son came from before he was moved to our agency's orphanage. We were told that this investigation is in response to the negative press that was aired by the Australian BBC a couple of months ago. We were told that the investigation has been going on for quite some time, but they are not sure exactly when it started or exactly when it will end.

If anyone has any information about this investigation, please email me or post a comment. Thank you!

  1. Can I ask what agency and orphanage this came from?

  2. We just came back from ET on Sunday and when at our embassy appointment, our agency was asked to provide the Kebele document. It apparently was a new document that the embassy was asking for for relinquished children. Our agency had it, but had to go back to the office to get it. Other agency representatives rushed back to go get their documents as well. In my opinion, it was just another document that the embassy is requesting.

  3. We received our referral in July and are still waiting for our court date when we were contacted about the delay due to this investigation. We have been given no other information other than something or someone is being investigated. No timeframes were given to us. Does anyone have any information on what is happening?

  6. Dear all,
we had our referral on June 8th and are also still waiting (we are in Belgium). We have finally found out that there were investigations done in the first orphanage our son lived in. We were not informed about timing either. We have been waiting for 6 months without knowing whether we will be able to adopthim or not. Finally we have been informed last Friday that the investigations were closed and that the orphanage has received all missing papers and permissions. So we will be able to adopt our son and are waiting for a court date now.
There have been investigations in several orphanages again - like last summer !!!
(ours is Medhanialem's Children Help Association in Addis)

I know how you are feeling ... and feel sorry for anyone who is waiting. Keep your faith.

Best of luck to ll of you !!!

  7. Anyone have any updated information yet? My agency continues to say that they have not heard anything new about the investigation. It's been going on for at least a month already, so it's hard to understand what is taking so long.

  8. I have not heard any updated info here. It seems like most agencies are not experiencing any delays and are not under investigation. It makes me wondering what is truly going on.

  9. I agree, even though according to my caseworker, several local governments/regions are under investigation. I haven't been able to find anything out from the internet. My caseworker has also told me that it does not have anything to do with the agency or the orphanage that our baby came from. They have also told us that in no way does this mean we can't adopt our baby and that it is truly just a matter of when. It is hard to continue to believe this though, since the investigation has been going on for quite some time now. If this is truly in response to the documentary aired by the Australian BBC that was in September, then this is a rather long investigation.

  11. We were informed on Dec 15th that our agency's orphanage has cleared the investigation and our case will be able to move forward now. I don't know if the whole investigation is over or if it's just case by case.

  13. We were affected by this investigation. Our referral was in July and we just finally received news of an end of January court date with travel in March. Our children have waited long enough, I pray for first time success. Good Luck to all waiting for news!

  16. Our agency says that things are just slow in the region where our baby came from. They still have not been able to get the signature that is needed from the Kebele that was under investigation, which concerned us a great deal, however, our agency tells us that it is only due to slow bureaucracy. We aren't sure what to think.
